A confrontation between the police and an individual occurred during a SWAT operation in the vicinity of Wannsee, Berlin, leading to the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old man. It was claimed that he had previously threatened a 49-year-old individual with a firearm, as stated by police and prosecutors on Saturday. The man was reportedly under guardianship due to mental health concerns. The incident spanned over numerous hours.
According to police and prosecutor reports, the 46-year-old man allegedly threatened the 49-year-old at a trailer park in the early hours. "The man successfully intimidated the assailant and reached out to the authorities," the statement read. "The 49-year-old avoided injury, trailed the man, and observed him entering a multi-family building on Dreilindenstraße." The suspect refused to open the door, prompting officers to forcefully enter the flat in the Nikolassee district later in the afternoon.
Man initiated gunfire
The man is then said to have unleashed a barrage of shots with his weapon, as per police and prosecutors' accounts. "The police responded with gunfire, ultimately eliminating the man."
The source of the 46-year-old's weapon remains unknown, as per prosecutors. A homicide investigation is underway.
The multi-family building is situated in Berlin's Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, an area primarily made up of villas and single-family homes. According to a dpa-interviewed residence, it accommodates social housing units, with an approximate 100 studio apartments. A primary school lies adjacent to the building.
The police were informed about the 49-year-old's observation of the man in the multi-family building by Dreilindenstraße, leading to the SWAT operation. After the confrontation, the police were called to the Nikolassee district due to the man initiating gunfire from within the flat.
