Customs - Belgium is Hesse's most important supplier of gingerbread
Belgium, known for its sweet treats, was Hesse's most important supplier of gingerbread last year. From August to December 2022, 33 tons of gingerbread and honey cake worth 113,000 euros were imported to Hesse from the neighbouring country. This was announced by the State Statistical Office on Friday.
In total, 96 tons of gingerbread and honey cake worth 371,000 euros were imported to Hesse from abroad during this period, the statisticians reported two days before the First Advent. Hesse's exports of gingerbread and honey cake abroad from August to December 2022 amounted to 84 tons of gingerbread and honey cake worth 440,000 euros.

Despite the significant imports, Hesse also has a thriving local trade in gingerbread. The annual Trade Fair in Wiesbaden showcases various delicacies, including traditional Hesse gingerbread. Moreover, the needs for gingerbread exports might arise if demand exceeds local production or imports. Consequently, Hesse could consider expanding its exports to other countries, such as Belgium, which has a strong tradition of sweet treats as well.
