Nobility - Belgian king praises cooperation on energy transition
At the start of his visit to Germany, King Philippe of Belgium praised the good cooperation between the two countries. At a state banquet hosted by the German President in Berlin on Tuesday evening, he cited climate protection and the expansion of renewable energies as examples.
"Our country is an important link for energy transit to Germany," said King Philippe in Bellevue Palace, according to a speech text that was circulated in advance. Belgium is working on the intelligent distribution of clean energy from the North Sea and has built wind turbines for 300,000 families on the German Baltic coast. "This unprecedented cooperation with Germany shows that Belgium is part of the solution to the many challenges we face."
King Philippe also emphasized that Berlin has become a second home for many Belgians. According to the speech text, he said: "We love Berlin, which stands for creativity, openness and innovation."
Belgium's head of state also showed his enthusiasm for soccer. "Our two teams and we, as their biggest fans, are already full of anticipation," he said with a view to next year's European Football Championship.
On Wednesday, the second day of the visit to Germany by the Belgian King and his wife Mathilde will include a visit to the German Aerospace Center and the East German transmission system operator 50Hertz. It belongs to the Belgian Elia Group. King Philippe will also be received by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). The royal couple's three-day trip ends in Dresden on Thursday.
