Misfortune in Mosel town - Before the collapse: Construction work on a hotel in Mosel-Ort
At the collapsed hotel in Kröv on the Moselle, construction was still taking place on Tuesday. "What can be said is that there were construction activities at the building yesterday," said the fire and disaster protection inspector of the Bernkastel-Wittlich district, Jörg Teusch. Whether these were in a causal connection with the collapse remains to be shown by expert opinions and investigations.
The main structure of the building dates back to the 17th century, said Teusch. "Around 1980, another two and a half floors were added to the ground floor." At that time, a basic structure was built over hollow-core slabs with supporting structures. "Exactly where the weak point was that led to the complete collapse of the first floor remains to be seen in expert opinions."
It must now be determined whether something in the supporting structure of the old building fabric has failed.
The collapse of the hotel in Kröv has raised concerns within the local [Hospitality industry], as it could impact tourism in the area. Despite the historic charm of the building, the addition of two and a half floors in the 1980s might have introduced new structural complexities.
