Animals - Bechstein's bat named secretive bat of the year

The Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz(BUND) from Hesse and Baden-Württemberg has named the Bechstein's bat the Secretive Bat of the Year 2024. According to BUND, this is the fourth time it has drawn attention to a native animal that remains hidden from most people in everyday life.

The Bechstein's bat honored this year is particularly at home in native natural forests, in Hesse for example in old oak and beech forests in the Rhine-Main lowlands and the Rheingau-Taunus. In Baden-Württemberg, it is often found in oak forests that are around 140 to 160 years old. As the BUND announced on Tuesday, increasing forestry is endangering the habitat of this nocturnal forest dweller, so that it is on the Red List of endangered species throughout Germany.
