Festival - "Bayreuth Baroque" with a top-class program

Of course, Bayreuth is primarily known for the Richard Wagner Festival. However, another classical music festival has now also established itself in the city: "Bayreuth Baroque".

This coming September, two staged opera productions will be performed in the Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the organizers announced on Friday. "Ifigenia in Aulide" by Nicola Antonio Porpora will be performed in a new production by artistic director Max Emanuel Cencic.

And with Antonio Vivaldi's "Orlando furioso", an international co-production with the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara is also coming to the Bayreuth stage for the first time. "That's exactly the direction we want to move in," said Cencic. Numerous other events are planned at various performance venues in baroque Bayreuth. The world-famous soprano Anna Prohaska will also be performing.

"Bayreuth Baroque" was established in 2020. The main venue is the opera house, which was once built by the art and music-loving Margravine Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1709-1758). It is one of the few surviving 18th century theaters in Europe and fascinates visitors with its richly decorated interior and historic stage technology. Unlike many earlier performance venues, the building was not destroyed by fire or war and was not significantly remodeled.

The Bayreuth Festival, most famously known for Richard Wagner's operas, shares the city with another acclaimed classical music event: "Bayreuth Baroque". This new festival operates at the Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The opera "Ifigenia in Aulide" by Nicola Antonio Porpora and Antonio Vivaldi's "Orlando furioso" are among the two staged opera productions scheduled for this September. Max Emanuel Cencic, the festival's artistic director, stated, "This is the direction we want to move in." The festival, established in 2020, honors Bayreuth's baroque past by hosting various events at historical performance venues, including the city's Margravial Opera House—an 18th-century theater remarkably preserved and undisturbed by fire or war.
