- Bayer's sports chief, Rolfes, acknowledges substantial promise.
Sport Chief Simon Rolfes thinks Bayer Leverkusen is on the right path to gaining more power. "Many still underestimate our massive capabilities. This isn't the Bayer 04 Leverkusen from 15 years ago. Bayer 04 is the top dog in the Rhineland, we're the international symbol of this region. We sense this influence in all aspects, and naturally, the double-win season gave our development a major boost," said the 42-year-old in an interview published by the Bundesliga club.
In his view, the coming years "present a massive chance to reach a level much higher than many think achievable. There's still a lot to accomplish." He doesn't view the raised expectations from fans after the double win as a burden: "The double isn't a heavy pack, but something that assists and propels us forward. The challenge may be bigger, but at the same time, we can gain so much confidence, strength, and belief in turning matches around or succeeding in high-pressure situations like a knockout game."
However, he considers the possibility of repeating last season's dominant performance and going through a Bundesliga season unbeaten as "really low". "There will be games we lose; games where we might not be at our best. We didn't play brilliantly in every game last season either, and that shouldn't be overblown or exaggerated. Yet, we are incredibly ambitious. We have a talented squad, great players, and we'll display a strong mentality," Rolfes added.
Other clubs in the league might underestimate Bayer Leverkusen's improved abilities due to their past performances. However, Bayer Leverkusen views the high expectations from fans as an opportunity rather than a burden, using it to boost their confidence and performance.
