Bayers Carro: Chance of salary cap at 50/50 soon
Club boss Fernando Carro of top Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen believes a salary cap in soccer is possible in the near future. "It's being discussed - even with UEFA. It's not easy because not everyone wants it. But I see a 50/50 chance that a limit will come in the next two years," Carro told the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" newspaper. The 59-year-old is a member of several international soccer committees, including the board of the European Club Association (ECA). "I'm actually a liberal person, but the spiral in soccer is going so high that a salary cap is necessary," said Carro.
He has also set himself the goal of improving the international match calendar. "The fact that the Africa Cup is played in the middle of the season is unacceptable," said Carro. "To change this, I will enter into a dispute with FIFA. We will also check whether there is a legal chance of not having to release the players." However, he does not believe this option is realistic.
Bayer Leverkusen are likely to be particularly affected by the continental tournament, which will be held in Côte d'Ivoire in January and February. In center forward Victor Boniface, winger Nathan Tella (both Nigeria), Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso), Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast) and Amine Adli (Morocco), five Leverkusen professionals are national players from Africa Cup participants.
Bayer Leverkusen's squad might be impacted by the Africa Cup, given that center forward Victor Boniface, winger Nathan Tella (both Nigeria), Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso), Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast), and Amine Adli (Morocco) are national players from African Cup participants. Carro's push for a salary cap in soccer extends beyond the Bundesliga, as he's currently discussing this possibility with UEFA and ECA.
