Soccer - Bayern shocker Saarbrücken hopes for another windfall
Bayern shockers 1. FC Saarbrücken could massively improve their financial situation with another coup in the DFB Cup. "If we win against Frankfurt, that would be a third of our planned budget for this season," press spokesman Peter Müller told the German Press Agency on Monday. A win in the round of 16 against Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday (18:00) would see the third division club receive a bonus of over 1.7 million euros from the German Football Association.
In addition, there is the spectator income: 40 percent each goes to the home and away team, 20 percent to the DFB. On November 1, 16,000 spectators witnessed Saarbrücken bring record cup winners FC Bayern Munich to their knees with a 2:1 victory. A win against Frankfurt would have earned the traditional club, once a founding member of the Bundesliga, a total of over three million euros in this round. According to the club, this opens up the option of strengthening the team and investing in sustainable development.
FCS had already knocked second-division club Karlsruher SC out of the competition in the first round. In 2020, Saarbrücken sensationally became the first ever fourth-division club to reach the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, where they were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. At the time, they collected a total of six million euros. "That got us through the coronavirus crisis without a hitch. The 3rd division is not blessed with a lot of TV money," explained Müller.
