- Bayern Munich pays tribute to its triumphant 1974 European Cup champions
FC Bayern Munich paid homage to its victors from Brussels, commemorating their initial European Cup victory in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which happened 50 years ago. This tribute took place at the Allianz Arena prior to the first home match of the season against SC Freiburg, led by President Herbert Hainer, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, and Deputy Chairman Michael Diederich.
The Bayern squad, spearheaded by the legendary libero Franz Beckenbauer, secured victory in the final against Atlético Madrid on May 17, 1974. Both teams had tied 1:1 in the initial encounter at the same location two days prior. Defender Hans-Georg "Katsche" Schwarzenbeck tied the score for the Udo Lattek-led team with his remarkable long-range shot just before the extra time ended, necessitating a replay. Bayern also claimed the European Cup in 1975 and 1976.
"Friends are forever bound"
The European Cup trophy and the championship trophy for the 1974 title were ushered into the stadium by the grandchildren of the former professionals. The song "Friends are forever bound" featuring Beckenbauer played in the background. Heidi Beckenbauer and Hildegard Lattek received floral arrangements. Hoeneß accepted a group photo on behalf of the former triumphant team. "It's always a pleasure to gather again," remarked goalkeeper Sepp Maier.
The FC Bayern Munich football league team celebrated their 1974 European Cup victory against Atlético Madrid by reenacting key moments from the match at the Allianz Arena. Fans and players alike are excited for the upcoming Football League season, with hopes of repeating past victories.
