- Bayern Munich celebrates double-scorer Müller – "Leon belongs to our group"
Despite the celebration following an impressive cup performance, Thomas Müller sympathized with his teammate Leon Goretzka who's currently grappling with some challenges. "He's facing some tough times at the moment, but he's training exceptionally well," Müller shared post-match after FC Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory against SSV Ulm in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. "Our squad is always filled with challenging situations. But Leon is one of us."
The veteran Müller, soon turning 35, played a significant role with early goals (12th and 15th minute) to support Vincent Kompany's successful Bayern coaching debut. "It wasn't flawless, but we maintained discipline. 4-0 is satisfying, now we move forward. Showing the right energy is crucial. It's our foundation," said Kompany.
Kingsley Coman and late substitute Harry Kane (90+3) added to the tally, making it 4-0.
"No player enjoys being sidelined"
As the game progressed, new Bayern signings Michael Olise and João Palhinha experienced their first taste of competitive action for the club. The acquisition of Palhinha has added complexity to Goretzka's situation, who's been struggling after missing the home European Championship. "I don't believe any player relishes being benched," commented sporting director Max Eberl about Goretzka's absence. "If you're a footballer and an athlete, you yearn to be on the field." Each player has the autonomy to manage their situation. Goretzka's contract runs until 2026, and he's perceived as a potential trade.
"In the end, it's not up to me. I enjoy playing alongside Leon. It's a bit disheartening for him," shared Joshua Kimmich, who partnered with Aleksandar Pavić in the midfield for Ulm. "However, I'm not responsible for that decision. It's the coach and the club. I'm not privy to the discussions happening."
Mr. Pokal's triumph
Meanwhile, Müller enjoyed the evening more, with colleague Serge Gnabry capturing a photo of him with Mr. Pokal, surrounded by a crowd of journalists at the Donaustadion. Only Charly Körbel (70 games for Eintracht Frankfurt) and Manfred Kaltz (67 games for Hamburger SV) have played more DFB-Pokal games for a club than Müller for Bayern (66).
"Someone like Thomas puts in a performance like he's playing in a Champions League final - and that's crucial," said Kompany. Ulm's coach Thomas Wörle, who once struck gold with Bayern's women's team, was equally impressed. "Impressive, impressive," said Wörle. Müller's agility and strategic moves were commendable.
FC Bayern Munich's dominance continued with Kingsley Coman and late substitute Harry Kane scoring, securing a 4-0 win against SSV Ulm. Despite his current challenges, Leon Goretzka watched from the sidelines as new signings Michael Olise and João Palhinha made their debuts, adding complexity to his situation.
