Soccer - Bayern loanee Stanisic: "Bad mood doesn't help"

He could be in the cup final for the first time and suddenly he is even setting up goals - Josip Stanisic is making progress in some respects. "I'm not used to doing that," said the Croatian after the 3:1 win with Bayer Leverkusen in the cup round of 16 against SC Paderborn on his third assist in a week: "But you're always developing." Before the two assists in the 2-0 Europa League win in Häcken last Thursday, he hadn't set up a goal in over two years.

But apart from that, the 23-year-old has failed to take the step he had hoped for since his loan move from serial champions FC Bayern Munich. He was only allowed to start once in the Bundesliga, otherwise only in the Europa League or in the cup when coach Xabi Alonso rotates.

"Things could be going better for me personally," he said. The 21 competitive games without defeat for his team are "still the most important thing for him. But it would be a lie if I said everything was perfect. But it doesn't help to put the team in a bad mood. Of course there are days when I'm in a better mood and others when it's worse. But that's down to my nature, always wanting to play.

That's exactly why he went to Leverkusen. Curiously, however, he would probably have more appearances in Munich in the meantime because Benjamin Pavard left the record champions after Stanisic's transfer and coach Thomas Tuchel has been complaining about a shortage in defense ever since. "It is what it is," said Stanisic about his reserve role at Bayer: "I joined later, then I was ill, and Odi is doing an outstanding job."

Odi, that's Odilon Kossounou, and after the winter break he will be at the Africa Cup for up to a month, just like his defensive colleague Edmond Tapsoba. Then Stanisic will be set and challenged. And the curious thing: unlike Bayern, with whom he has never reached the final, he is still in the cup with Leverkusen. And leads the Bundesliga table ahead of his parent club.

Josip Stanisic's loan move from FC Bayern Munich brought him to Bayer Leverkusen in Bavaria, but he's only started once in the Bundesliga for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Despite the 21-competitive games without defeat for his team, Josip Stanisic expressed that things could be going better for him personally. He had his third assist in a week during the DFB Cup round of 16 against SC Paderborn, but his opportunities have been limited in the Bundesliga and Europa League. Curiously, he might have had more appearances in Munich due to Benjamin Pavard's departure and Thomas Tuchel's shortage in defense. Surprisingly, Josip Stanisic is still in the cup with Leverkusen, even leading the Bundesliga table ahead of his parent club, FC Bayern Munich, in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the Europa League, Josip Stanisic set up a goal in the 2-0 win against Häcken last Thursday, which was his first assist in over two years. His progress is evident in some respects as he continues to develop, but his bad mood doesn't help the situation, and he acknowledged that he always wants to play. On the other hand, Bayer Leverkusen is preparing for the Cup final, which if they win, will be Josip Stanisic's first appearance in a cup final. His defensive colleagues, Odilon Kossounou and Edmond Tapsoba, will be away in Africa for up to a month during the winter break, and Stanisic will have a chance to step up in their absence.

Although Josip Stanisic hasn't reached a final with Bayern, he currently has that opportunity with Bayer Leverkusen, raising questions if he'd have experienced more opportunities with the reigning champions. His future continues to be uncertain as he navigates his role as a loanee in Bayer Leverkusen, but his determination to improve and his potential in Soccer remains evident.
