Basketball World Champion Johannes Voigtmann joins German champions FC Bayern. The 31-year-old is moving from Italian powerhouse Olimpia Milan and has signed a contract until 2027, as announced by the Munich-based club.

For the center, this also means a reunion with Bayern's new coach Gordon Herbert, under whom Voigtmann sensationally won the World Cup with the German national team in 2023.

At the Olympic Games in Paris, Voigtmann and the German Basketball Federation team missed out on bronze after a defeat against Serbia and finished fourth. For head coach Herbert, this was his last tournament as national coach. His successor will be presented on Thursday.

General Manager Pesic: Voigtmann a leader

"With Jo Voigtmann, we're getting a player of international caliber," said Bayern's general manager Marko Pesic. The native Thuringian is also a leader.

Voigtmann last played in the Bundesliga in 2016 for the Frankfurt Skyliners. After stops with Spanish club Baskonia and CSKA Moscow in Russia, he moved to Italy. "I'm very happy to be in Munich and to return to Germany and the Bundesliga after many years abroad," said Voigtmann.

Voigtmann's return to Germany involves joining FC Bayern's basketball team, the same team where he previously won the World Cup under the guidance of coach Gordon Herbert. Marko Pesic, Bayern's general manager, is thrilled about acquiring a leader in Voigtmann, as he described, "With Jo Voigtmann, we're getting a player of international caliber."
