Munich - Bayern basketball players pull off a surprise against Bologna

FC Bayern Munich 's basketball team remains on course for success. On Thursday, the Bundesliga basketball club defeated third-placed Virtus Bologna 90:76 (44:46) in the EuroLeague to record its fourth win in a row in all competitions. Pablo Laso's team claimed its fifth win in eleven games in the European Cup and Bayern won two EuroLeague games in succession for the first time this season. Long-time NBA pro Serge Ibaka shone with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Munich initially failed to get a grip on Bologna's offense in front of German national basketball coach Gordon Herbert and Bayern's soccer coach Thomas Tuchel: The visitors scored 28 points in the first quarter and built an eight-point lead. In the second half, Bayern also initially faltered in offense and the gap grew to 14 points. However, basketball world champion Isaac Bonga (ten points, eight rebounds) and Serge Ibaka pulled Munich back to 44:46 at half-time.

It was also Ibaka who gave Munich its first lead midway through the third quarter. The home side now looked more stable in defense, frequently made free throws in offense, dominated the rebounding duel and was 70:66 ahead going into the final period. Bayern opened up a double-digit gap for the first time with just under six minutes remaining and produced a 16:2 run to decide the game.
