Farming Industry - Bayer will have to pay a considerably lower amount in the glyphosate lawsuit.
"Even though the court has lowered the illegally inflated compensation amount, we disagree with their verdict on this issue," the corporation stated on a Wednesday. The hearing was marked by major blunders that required rectification.
Bayer also underlined the fact that the business had won 14 out of the last 20 trials it faced. Many of the accusations had been resolved, it emphasized.
The difficulties regarding the herbicide Roundup, which contains glyphosate, were discovered by Bayer in 2018 during its takeover of the American company Monsanto. That same year, the first lawsuit against the German company was decided. This caused a flood of lawsuits in the United States. In 2020, Bayer introduced a billion-dollar plan to settle most of the claims without attributing any liability. A considerable number of cases have been dealt with, but potential risks still exist. As of the end of January, approximately 54,000 of the estimated 165,000 unresolved cases remained active. Bayer has spent €13 billion on the Roundup litigation so far. The provisions were set at $6.3 billion ($5.7 billion) at the end of 2023.
