Nowotny, the experienced defensive strategist, who played for Leverkusen from 1996 to 2006 and managed to secure the runner-up spot four times and reach the Champions League final in 2002, is set to join an elite club. Joining Nowotny, the 50-year-old who played in 48 international games, are names such as Rüdiger Vollborn, Bernd Schneider, Simon Rolfes, Carsten Ramelow, and Lars Bender. The list also includes former strikers Ulf Kirsten and Stefan Kießling, who have all received the title of honorary captain for Bayer.
After an illustrious career with Leverkusen, Nowotny now returns to his former club as a ceremonial captain, representing Germany. With the addition of Nowotny, Bayer 04 Leverkusen continues to honor its rich German football history.
