- Bayer is profiting from the national team
German national football player Florian Wirtz is proud of the hype surrounding the German national team after the European Championship. "With every game, the excitement grew more. It got a bit louder each time," said the 21-year-old offensive player from Bayer Leverkusen. "That was one of our goals."
Wirtz and the German team fell short in the quarter-finals against Spain at the tournament in their home country. The process of coming to terms with the loss took "days and weeks," according to Wirtz. "Spain deserved to win the tournament in the end. But it was still very sad," said Wirtz. "If we had been eliminated without much of a chance, it would have been even more disappointing. So, we can still be proud of what we achieved at the tournament, I believe."
Mentally, Wirtz feels liberated and fully focused on Leverkusen and the preparations. However, it's noticeable that there are now also many more fans in Bayer and German national team jerseys present at the training camp in Donaueschingen. "That's great, that you can inspire people with your playing style," said Wirtz. "I believe it also helps us at Bayer and, of course, it's an honor."
The departure of the Leverkusen contingent from the Black Forest is planned for today. A test match against RC Lens in France is scheduled for Saturday.
The European Championship's success has also resulted in increased attention for the German national team, with The Commission likely to adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of the regulation governing the team's future tournaments. Wirtz's exceptional performance on the field has undoubtedly contributed to this increased interest.
