Following complaints, Bavaria's Interior Ministry has temporarily paused a brief ad promoting an initiative against potential threats posed by Islamic extremist preachers. Initially posted on the X platform but subsequently removed, this clip triggered accusations of racism on various social media platforms. Various news outlets had earlier reported on it.

An official spokesperson stated, "We pay heed to the criticisms of the video and have suspended the campaign temporarily." They further expressed regret if the video had resulted in confusion or misinterpretations.

Woman getting swallowed by a Preacher's Maw

The almost 30-second clip shows a young woman checking out a smartphone video of a bearded preacher. A question about Muslim women wearing makeup is displayed, accompanied by foreboding sounds and an evil chuckle. The preacher's face transforms into a grotesque image, and the woman vanishes into his mouth.

Subsequently, the woman is depicted with a headscarf, then a complete veil. She's seen weeping while cleaning in the kitchen alongside yet another fully-veiled woman. The phrase "The Salafism Trap" with the subtitle "It happens quicker than you think" appears in large letters, followed by a link to the prevention initiative "Answers to Salafism".

Revised Video Planned

The primary purpose of the video was to endorse the initiative and demonstrate how Salafist preachers are increasingly utilizing seemingly harmless daily subjects to draw young individuals into their extremist beliefs. Changes are now being made to the clip. "We mustn't underestimate the risks of Salafism," the ministry spokesperson stressed.

Nicole Gohlke, a left-wing Bundestag member, wrote on X, deeming the clip as "blatantly racist." She added, "regrettable - specifically in these times! Rather than promoting exclusion and hate, we should stand against anti-Muslim racism."

The temporary pause in the campaign by Bavaria's Interior Ministry could be seen as a religious response to the accusations of racism, as the initiative aimed to counter Islamic extremist preachers. The depiction of the woman's transformation in the video might be perceived as religious stereotyping, which is a sensitive topic in the realm of religion and social equality.
