- Bavaria aims to stimulate the installation of solar panels on roadways.
The Free State is encouraging the installation of solar panels alongside roads and is offering over 2,000 hectares of land for lease. As per the Bavarian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport's announcement, about 30,000 separate plots along federal and state roads in Bavaria are suitable for installing solar panels.
On a total area of around 2,150 hectares, these solar panels could potentially generate 2.5 terawatt hours of energy annually. This would be sufficient to power around 700,000 single-family homes. These suitable areas will be available at a later date on the Solar Area Exchange of the Energy Atlas Bavaria.
The Ministry of Infrastructure expects municipalities, utility companies, citizen energy cooperatives, developers, and even individual homeowners to increasingly install solar panels along roads. "The benefits are obvious," stated Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU). "The areas adjacent to transportation routes have already been impacted, so the necessary environmental alterations are relatively minimal."
Additionally, no new land would need to be acquired. The database consists of areas along the approximately 5,800 kilometers of federal roads and 14,300 kilometers of state roads in Bavaria, as well as over 400 noise barriers.
The Free State's initiative to install solar panels by roads aligns well with the necessity for advancements in both [Transport and telecommunications], as these systems often rely on robust energy sources. In fact, the potential energy generation from these solar panels could significantly reduce the reliance on traditional power sources for related infrastructure.
