Soccer - Baumgart open: Situation leads to coach discussion

Coach Steffen Baumgart has announced an unsparing analysis of the situation at 1. FC Köln after the last game of the year at Union Berlin on Wednesday (18:30/Sky). For him, it is normal that his job will also be discussed. "The situation means that the coach will be discussed," said Baumgart on Tuesday. After 15 games, Cologne are in serious danger of relegation with just ten points.

There had recently been speculation that the relationship between Baumgart and sporting director Christian Keller had become difficult. "We have a very, very good exchange and dealings with each other. I also think it's good that we talk openly," Baumgart said specifically. "Nevertheless, we have to question everything. Ten points from 15 games can't satisfy anyone." Keller made similar comments after the 2-0 defeat in Freiburg on Sunday.

The FC coach has now announced that, regardless of the result, he will take stock on Wednesday: "This has to do with the overall situation and how the entire six months have gone." The 51-year-old has been coach in Cologne since the summer of 2021 and his contract is valid until the summer of 2025. "It's not about people, it's about the club," Baumgart continued. Just a few weeks ago, Keller had publicly endorsed the coach and praised his work. Two weeks ago, however, Baumgart expressed his dissatisfaction that the FC management was apparently thinking about selling regular players in order to finance reinforcements. "If there is no money, we have to find some," Baumgart demanded. "In this city and in this club, it must be possible to act differently than we are doing at the moment." Since then, there has been speculation that the relationship between coach and sporting director is strained.
