Baumgart on Fischer's departure from Union: "Not a knee-jerk reaction"

Soccer coach Steffen Baumgart has regretted the separation of his colleague Urs Fischer and 1. FC Union Berlin. "Of course it hits you. Especially when you see how successfully he has worked," Baumgart told the media after a test match of his 1. FC Köln on Wednesday. He was always in very close contact with the Swiss. Fischer and the Berlin Bundesliga club had ended their long and extremely successful partnership after 14 games without a win and a slide to the bottom of the table.

Fischer and Baumgart had repeatedly expressed their mutual appreciation in recent years. "I hold him in very high regard, I think he has done a very, very good job. And yet it is sometimes the case that we reach our limits," said Baumgart on Wednesday.

He added that we shouldn't allow ourselves to judge the whys and wherefores from the outside. "I'm sure that all parties will have had a clear discussion about this. This will not have been a knee-jerk reaction. The matter will have been clearly analyzed," said the 51-year-old about the separation. "That's not just what I've read, but I assume that I know a bit about it."

Baumgart has been an absolute fan favorite at Union since his time as a player and is still connected to the club. His wife also worked for the club and he is said to still have an apartment in Köpenick. For this reason, the 51-year-old has repeatedly been mentioned as a possible future coach at the Eisern. With Cologne, Baumgart is level on points with Union in 17th place.

Despite the 1st FC Cologne and 1st FC Union Berlin being rivals in the Bundesliga, Soccer coach Steffen Baumgart showed support for his former colleague Urs Fischer. He commended Fischer's work with 1st FC Union Berlin, stating, "I think he has done a very, very good job." This was despite the fact that Fischer and the club had ended their partnership due to a winless streak and sliding position in the table.
