Bartsch again sharply attacks Wagenknecht's group

Faction leader Dietmar Bartsch opened the second day of the Left Party's national conference with fierce attacks against Sahra Wagenknecht and her fellow campaigners. Bartsch once again blamed this group for the dissolution of the Left Party parliamentary group. The liquidation was a "huge defeat", Bartsch said at the party conference in Augsburg on Saturday.

"The responsibility for this lies first and foremost with the ten MPs who left the party. Or rather, the nine MPs who only see the tenth as a political savior," said Bartsch, without mentioning Wagenknecht by name. Running away when it matters is not his thing, the parliamentary group leader emphasized. "That's a matter for others."

Wagenknecht and her supporters left the Left Party in October to form a rival party. Due to the split, the parliamentary group will have to disband on December 6.

Bartsch called on his comrades to pick themselves up now. "We will continue to fight," he said. "We want a political comeback for the Left." The delegates at the party conference on Saturday also wanted to debate a motion calling on the ten MPs who had resigned to hand in their seats in the Bundestag.

The main topic of the party's three-day meeting in Bavaria will be the European elections in June 2024, when party chairman Martin Schirdewan and refugee and climate activist Carola Rackete will head the list of candidates.

Despite the MPs who left the party, Bartsch urged for continuation, stating, "We will continue to fight, we want a political comeback for the Left." Furthermore, the delegates discussed a motion urging the departed MPs to relinquish their seats in the Bundestag.
