Household - Barke: Saarland will soon pledge funding amounts

The Saarland government will soon make an official and binding commitment to its share of the funding for the production of "green" steel in Saarland. This was announced by Economics Minister Jürgen Barke (SPD) on Wednesday during the budget debate in the state parliament in Saarbrücken.

This involves around 780 million euros. This is Saarland's share of the total 2.6 billion euros in funding for the conversion to hydrogen-produced steel that Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) promised on Monday during a visit to the Saarland steel industry.

Barke thanked the opposition CDU in particular for clearing the way in the state parliament for a binding promise of state funding. "At best, we will be able to sign an administrative agreement on Monday", he said, "in which the state's funding amounts are then clearly committed". This administrative agreement is part of the procedure defined by the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Ministry of Finance for the release of these funds.

On Monday, the CDU had agreed to cooperate with the SPD in order to continue to secure access to the state's three billion euro transformation fund, which is largely debt-financed. The necessary steps for this are to be voted on Monday, as well as the state budget for 2024 and 2025, at a special session of the state parliament.

Access to the transformation fund is the prerequisite for Saarland being able to raise the 780 million euros of its own contribution to the funding.

Barke pointed out that new technologies could also create numerous new jobs in the SME sector. There are undoubtedly "jobs that will definitely be lost elsewhere", for example in the area of vehicle drives. It is therefore important that new jobs - for example in the planned production of battery cells - are created in a "symbiotic network of industry, SMEs and skilled trades".
