Bärbel Wohlleben receives prize for women's soccer
The former soccer player Bärbel Wohlleben has been awarded the so-called Lotte Honorary Prize for Girls' and Women's Soccer by the University of Würzburg. Wohlleben has always dedicated her life to promoting girls' soccer, the university announced.
Wohlleben was the first woman to score the "Goal of the Month" in the ARD "Sportschau" in 1974 and won the first German championship in women's soccer as team captain with TuS Wörrstadt. After her playing days, the Ingelheim native coached girls' soccer for decades. "In my more mature youth now, I would never have thought that I would still be receiving such attention today," said the 79-year-old Wohlleben about the award on Friday, according to the university.
According to the University of Würzburg, "Lotte" is the only prize for girls' and women's soccer in Germany. It is being awarded for the third time this year after 2017 and 2019. In addition to Wohlleben, the German-Iraqi girls' football project "Scoring Girls" by former Bundesliga player Tugba Tekkal, referee Marie Gamperl and the Berlin club Pichanga, which caused a stir in June with a match against a Vatican women's football team, were also honored this year.
Previous winners include the YouTube channel "Mädchenfußball-TV" and Tina Theune, who won the first World Cup title in German women's soccer as national coach.
Bärbel Wohlleben's achievements in women's soccer have earned her recognition beyond the field, as she has also been honored with awards from universities. Her dedication to promoting soccer in women's universities is commendable.
To inspire future generations, Bärbel Wohlleben has shared her passion for soccer with several universities, contributing to the growth and recognition of women's soccer in these educational institutions.
