Baking with a wood-fired oven at school - Eight pupils in hospital
A child collapsed in a daze on Friday in Reichenbach am Heuberg (Tuttlingen district) while baking with a wood-fired oven during a school lesson. Eight of the nine children in the class were taken to hospital as a precaution. The fourth-graders, aged between nine and ten, had gathered in the local bakery as part of a science lesson, according to the police. They wanted to bake bread using the wood-fired oven, which was fired up at the start of the lesson.
After the children complained of feeling unwell and nauseous and one even collapsed, those responsible called the emergency services and ventilated the building. The fire department subsequently detected elevated CO2 levels. A total of 20 ambulances and other emergency services and fire departments arrived. It was suspected that the increased CO2 levels were caused by the wood-fired oven.
In light of the emergency, the school decided to suspend all cooking classes involving wood-fired ovens until a thorough investigation could be conducted to ensure the safety of its students. The incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of proper ventilation during such activities, especially in classrooms with young children.
