Bakeries launch campaign week against domestic violence

Bakeries in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have started their annual campaign week against domestic violence. Around 70,000 bread bags with the inscription "Gewalt kommt nicht in die Tüte" (Violence does not come in the bag) are to be distributed to customers, according to the Ministry of Justice in Schwerin. It is organizing the campaign together with the state guild association of bakers and confectioners. The information on the help hotline for victims of domestic violence on 08000 116 016 (www.hilfetelefon.de) is particularly important.

Justice Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt (Left Party) emphasized at the start of the campaign in Rostock: "Unfortunately, there is still violence, especially against women and girls. We have to shake people up, address the violence and offer victims a way out." The campaign is part of the International Week against Violence against Women and Children.

According to the Minister, the number of recorded cases of domestic violence is increasing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to Bernhardt, 1556 cases were recorded in 2017, compared to 1964 in 2022, which is around 400 more.

According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, around 240,000 people were victims of domestic violence in Germany last year. Of these, 71.1 percent of victims were female, while 76.3 percent of perpetrators were male, according to the report. In addition, a partner or ex-partner attempts to kill a woman almost every day.

The bakeries in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern trade these special bread bags with the anti-violence message during their campaign week. To effectively combat domestic violence, it's crucial to raise awareness about available resources, such as the help hotline at 08000 116 016 or online at www.hilfetelefon.de.
