Middle East - Baerbock defends German foreign policy in the Gaza war
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has defended German policy with regard to the Gaza war. In her view, responsibility does not mean simply broadcasting one's own stance to the world, said the politician at the Central Council of Jews' Community Day in Berlin on Friday. "I have to be prepared to put myself in the other person's shoes, even if I don't agree with them at all, because otherwise I will never understand where their thoughts are coming from."
That's why it's important for her to go where the heated discussions are being held, not with Israel, but about Israel - for example on the sidelines of the climate conference in Dubai. "Yes, the attitude I heard there was, to put it diplomatically, more than challenging," said Baerbock. "But these debates and being there were important." Otherwise, she would not have been able to ask the Arab partners why they did not call on Hamas to lay down their arms.
The Foreign Minister also spoke about UN resolutions. It is not easy to reject any resolution that states that children in Gaza are suffering brutally. On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly had called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The paper submitted by Egypt achieved the necessary two-thirds majority. 153 countries voted in favor, 10 against. 23 countries abstained, including Germany.
