Bundesliga - Badstuber ahead of top match: "Little is communicated at Bayern"

Former national team player Holger Badstuber (34) has been missing a real defensive leader at FC Bayern since David Alaba left for Real Madrid in 2021. "It's important to be vocal at the back, to support and to have an organizing hand. When I'm in the stadium, I pay a lot of attention to how the defenders behave towards each other. There's little communication at Bayern, they don't push each other enough to stop the opposition and not allow any goalscoring opportunities," said the former Munich defender in an interview with Sky ahead of the Bundesliga top match between FC Bayern and VfB Stuttgart on Sunday (7.30pm).

Dayot Upamecano, who moved to Munich from RB Leipzig in 2021, is not a leader in defense in Badstuber's opinion. "Upamecano has great potential in footballing terms, he's also improved compared to last year, but in terms of his personality, I don't see him as a leader. You can't fool yourself and artificially impose the role on the player. It has to be intrinsically motivated," said Badstuber, who will end his career in 2022.

He is also critical of Matthijs de Ligt, who is in recovery training after tearing an inner ligament. "In Turin, he didn't make it as an absolute regular, (Giorgio) Chiellini and (Leonardo) Bonucci were the bosses there," Badstuber said of the central defender, who joined from Juventus in 2022. "Last season, the role of leader at Bayern was thrust upon him, the result with just one title and many goals conceded speaks for itself."

Former defender Badstuber, who also played for VfB, praises the current Stuttgart coach. "There is calm within the club and Sebastian Hoeneß brought in a certain stability and structure as soon as he arrived. He has continued this despite the high-profile departures in the summer. In Alexander Nübel, they've brought in a good goalkeeper who plays with confidence, has a good understanding of the game and radiates calm," said Badstuber.
