German Weather Service - Bad prospects for a white Christmas: mild weather
The prospects for a white Christmas are poor: according to previous estimates by the German Weather Service (DWD ), it will be mild and rainy in Bavaria. The chance is rather low everywhere in Bavaria, said a DWD meteorologist on Tuesday. However, there are still fluctuations in the forecast.
It will still snow on Wednesday - above 800 meters, according to the DWD. Meanwhile, people in the foothills of the Alps can expect some sunshine. After that, it will be more uncomfortable: Thursday is forecast to be very cloudy with rain and five to eleven degrees. There will also be lots of clouds and intermittent showers on Friday.
On Christmas Eve, temperatures are expected to be between six and twelve degrees, according to reports. This will hardly change over the Christmas holidays. It could also rain at times. According to Tuesday's forecast, the nights should also remain mild: No frost is expected.
It is true that Christmas Eve was often white before climate change, but it was also an exception back then. Even in the days of our grandparents, the probability of this happening was never particularly high, according to an analysis of the DWD's climate archive. Christmas simply comes at the wrong time: the so-called Christmas thaw often sets in shortly before the festive season. Mild Atlantic air flows in from the west and brings rain, among other things. There is an annual probability of up to 70 percent that this will happen.

Despite the poor weather prospects, some sunshine is expected in the foothills of the Alps on Wednesday, but rain is predicted for Thursday and Friday. The mild weather is also expected to continue on Christmas Eve, with temperatures between six and twelve degrees and potential rainfall. Historically, a white Christmas in Bavaria has been an exception, with only a 70% annual probability of the so-called Christmas thaw occurring, bringing mild Atlantic air and rain to the region. Unfortunately, as mentioned by the German Weather Service (DWD), a white Christmas is not in the cards this year, as rain is predicted throughout the festive season.
