Animal siblings - Baby lions romp through the enclosure at Nuremberg Zoo
Playfully romping around and even biting into a piece of meat - the lion cubs Indica and Jadoo can now be seen doing just that at Nuremberg Zoo. However, the three-month-old cubs still want to be close to their mother. Lioness Aarany and male lion Kiron continue to look after the two with great care, explained vet Hermann Will.
The siblings weighed nine kilos at their most recent examination two weeks ago. "The young lions have developed very well," said Will. They are still being suckled by their mother, but are also eating meat.
The little lions were born at the zoo on September 16. Since then, the predator house has been closed to visitors so that the lion family could have some peace and quiet. Now it is open again.
There was great joy at the zoo at the birth of the two lion cubs - a female and a male. The lioness had already given birth to four babies in May, but they did not survive. She ate three shortly after giving birth, which is not unusual for inexperienced lionesses, according to the zoo. The last time lion cubs were born at the zoo was in 2006.
Young lions stay in their group until they are two years old. According to the zoo, it has not yet been decided which zoo the two animals will then move to. The Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are part of the European conservation breeding program, which will decide which zoo the animals will go to.
According to the zoo, the species is highly endangered in the wild. As a result, there is currently only one population of around 630 animals in a national park in India. For this reason, reintroduction into the wild is out of the question for the foreseeable future, the zoo explained.
