Oberberg district - Baby abandoned 20 years ago - "cold case" remains unsolved
The case of an infant who was abandoned and died 20 years ago in Reichshof-Eckenhagen in the Upper Berg region will probably remain unsolved forever. Following a new appeal for witnesses by the police almost two months ago, no useful information was received, said Detective Chief Inspector Kerstin Nolte from the "Cold Cases" unit of the Cologne police to the German Press Agency. As the case was investigated for manslaughter, the statute of limitations has now expired and the files will be closed.
The newborn boy was found on December 12, 2003 outside the door of a detached house. According to the investigators, the mother had left her child there. The infant died of hypothermia in hospital. The authorities gave him the name "Dominik". The police invited around 500 women to take a DNA test, but there were no results.
A few weeks before the statute of limitations set in after 20 years, the police once again turned to the public and published photos of the baby's clothes. The investigators hoped that confidants - perhaps even the child's father - would come forward. Unfortunately, this did not happen, said Nolte.
