A man is suspected of severely injuring a 26-year-old with an axe in Mönchengladbach. A 39-year-old was lightly injured in the incident on Saturday evening, as reported by the police.

According to current investigations, two groups got into an argument at Platz der Republik in the Hardterbroich-Pesch district. When the altercation threatened to escalate, a 39-year-old tried to intervene. One of the participants is said to have hit him on the arm with his shoulder bag, causing the 39-year-old to suffer a cut and retreat.

Then, the attacker is said to have taken an axe out of his bag and hit the 26-year-old on the leg with it. The perpetrator and other men from his group then fled the scene. Both injured parties were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The police secured an axe left at the crime scene. Initial search efforts for the suspect were initially unsuccessful. The police are investigating the case of dangerous bodily harm and are seeking witnesses.
