Animals - Avian influenza detected in NRW for the first time this winter

The first cases of highly contagious avian influenza have been reported in North Rhine-Westphalia this winter. The premises of a breeder in Versmold are affected for the second time this week, as the district of Gütersloh announced on Friday. The Friedrich Löffler Institute has confirmed the outbreak in a duck pen in East Westphalia following samples taken by the Veterinary Investigation Office in Detmold. The outbreak of avian influenza had already been confirmed by the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health in another barn on the farm premises on Tuesday.

Following the initial findings, around 30,000 fattening ducks had already been killed to prevent the spread of the plague. On Thursday, the second affected flock of around 30,000 ducklings were killed. The authorities have set up an exclusion zone around the farm.
