Authorities warn against exotic animal gifts for Christmas
The Kassel Regional Council has called on people not to give any exotic pets as presents at Christmas. "The animals have a right to species- and behavior-appropriate accommodation as well as appropriate care for their lifetime," said Heike Wiegand from the authority's species protection department in Kassel on Tuesday. The vast majority of families cannot meet this requirement in terms of time and money. An acquisition must therefore be carefully planned. In addition, the private keeping of dangerous animals such as snakes, spiders and crocodiles is even prohibited in Hesse.
Despite the appeal, some individuals might still consider trading in exotic animals as gifts. Unfortunately, the high maintenance requirements and lifelong commitment for such creatures often lead to a tragic end for these animals in private households.
