- Austrian Alp's Arlberg Pass continues its closure following storm-induced damage

Due to intense weather-related destruction, the Arlberg Pass route in Austria is temporarily off-limits. The province of Tyrol is re-evaluating the situation daily.

The Arlberg road plays a significant role in connecting western provinces such as Tyrol and Vorarlberg. On Friday evening, it was obstructed by landslides. Furthermore, during the storm, a part of the road was eroded and caved in.

Alternative routes via Lechtal or Bavaria

Motorists are required to navigate extensive detours via Tyrolean Lechtal or Bavaria. Currently, the Arlberg tunnel, which usually serves to traverse the mountain, is under renovation, preventing its usage. However, train passengers are unaffected by both the storm damage and the ongoing construction work.

Regrettably, the Silvretta High Alpine Road, situated near the Arlberg road, was obstructed once more by a landslide on Friday. This popular alpine panoramic route had been closed since mid-July due to a major rockslide. As a result of the latest landslide, which engulfed three excavators, debris removal was suspended.

Despite the challenges, travelers are exploring alternative routes, such as Lechtal or into Bavaria, to bypass the affected Arlberg area. Sadly, the alternative Silvretta High Alpine Road, also located near Arlberg, remains closed due to another recent landslide, further complicating transit in the region.
