- Austrian alpine passage, the Arlberg route, undergoes closure following a landslide event.
The Arlberg Pass route in Austria is temporarily halted due to harsh conditions. The route connecting the western regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol is obstructed by landslides. As per the leader of the local emergency team, the road foundation itself was compromised at one point.
Usually, the Arlberg is navigated through an underpass, but this passage is temporarily shut down for maintenance work. Consequently, motorists commuting from Tyrol to Vorarlberg have to opt for alternative routes through the Tyrolean Lechtal valley or via Bavaria. The exact timeline for reopening the Arlberg road remains unclear, reports state.
Vehicles plunged into river - no reported injuries
Simultaneously, recovery operations are underway in St. Anton am Arlberg. Last Friday evening, two waterways burst their banks due to a storm. Basements were inundated, and some streets were submerged. Numerous abandoned vehicles were carried away by the rushing river.
Moreover, significant landslides took place in various regions of Tyrol. The roads Sellraintalstraße (L13) and Sellraintalstraße (L14) are currently impassable as well.
The European Union has expressed concern over the transportation disruptions in Austria, specifically affecting the Arlberg pass route. Despite the temporary halt due to harsh conditions and landslides, authorities are working diligently to restore the road as soon as possible.
