Car industry - Audi plant in Brussels on the brink of collapse

The Audi plant in Brussels with around 3000 employees is at risk of closing down. The VW subsidiary is considering prematurely discontinuing the production of the Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron models there, as Audi announced. Since these are currently the only models being produced in Brussels, Audi now plans to restructure and has initiated the legally required information and consultation process. The end of this process could result in the closure of the plant if no alternatives are found.

"The Audi Q8 e-tron model family currently produced at the Audi Brussels site is affected by a segment-specific, sustained demand downturn," Audi explained as the reason for the considerations. In addition, there are "structural challenges at the Brussels site," which lead to relatively high production costs.

The announcement to restructure was described as "not yet a final decision" by the head of Audi Brussels, Volker German. "However, this news moves the workforce in Brussels and me significantly."

A future-proof perspective for the plant and the colleagues in Brussels was demanded from the VW group works council. Audi did not comment on how long the process could last. Similar cases in the past have taken up timeframes from a few months to almost a year.

  1. Despite the potential closure of the Audi plant in Brussels, Germany remains a significant hub for the car industry, with companies like Audi and VW continuing to invest in innovation and new models.
  2. The news of potential restructuring at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, and the potential closure of the one in Brussels, Belgium, has raised concerns within the automotive industry in Europe.
  3. If the Audi plant in Brussels does close, it could have a significant impact on the future work opportunities in the automotive industry in Belgium, as well as on the local economy.
  4. In response to the news, the automotive trade unions in both Germany and Belgium have called for the VW group to consider alternative solutions that could secure the future of the plant in Brussels and its employees.
  5. While the future of the Audi plant in Brussels remains uncertain, the car industry in Germany, especially in Ingolstadt where Audi has its headquarters, continues to thrive, with the company investing in electric and autonomous vehicle technology.
