- Attacks on women in Oppenheim - search is underway
After two physical assaults on two women each in the Oppenheimer Old Town (Mainz-Bingen district), police are searching for the suspected perpetrator. It is still uncertain whether the same person is responsible for both incidents, a police spokeswoman said on Monday. Police are currently evaluating witness statements. The victims can also be questioned on Monday, as they were previously unable to be interviewed due to their severe injuries.
The attacks occurred in the early hours of Sunday. An unknown woman is said to have hit two girls, aged 15 and 17, with a full bottle after an argument, injuring the 15-year-old lightly in the face. The 17-year-old was reportedly severely injured and taken to hospital.
A short time later, there was another physical altercation, according to police. A 21-year-old and her 31-year-old sister were struck in the face with an unknown object and severely injured. "Due to the local and temporal aspects and the nature of the violence used, where a heavy object was used in both cases, we suspect a possible connection," the police spokeswoman said. However, it cannot be ruled out that there were two different perpetrators.
The two girls who were assaulted in the early hours of Sunday were both women. Despite the possibility of two different perpetrators, the nature and severity of the attacks suggest a common culprit.
