State protection proceedings - Attack planned: Defense demands lenient sentences

In the Hamburg state security proceedings against two brothers from Syria who allegedly planned an explosives attack on a Swedish church, the defense of the two men has argued for lenient sentences. The defense attorneys did not make any concrete motions at the hearing on Wednesday, said a spokeswoman for the Higher Regional Court. However, the defense lawyer for the 29-year-old defendant had argued for "a lenient sentence". The defense lawyer for the 24-year-old brother had argued for a prison sentence in the probationable range, i.e. not more than two years.

The public prosecutor's office had previously requested a six-year prison sentence for the older brother for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and financing terrorism. On Tuesday, the representative of the public prosecutor's office demanded a prison sentence of two and a half years for the younger brother, who is five years younger, for aiding and abetting the financing of terrorism. Neither man has a criminal record.

The 29-year-old was arrested in April in the St. Georg district of Hamburg. According to the public prosecutor's office, he is said to have prepared an Islamist attack with an explosive belt against the backdrop of the Koran burnings in the Scandinavian country. The exact place and time of the attack is still to be decided. His younger brother is said to have supported him in procuring materials. He was arrested in Kempten in the Allgäu region. The verdict is expected on December 19.
