Public prosecutor's office - Attack on police officers in Tübingen: Indictment filed
Following an incident in which two police officers were injured during an arrest in Tübingen, the public prosecutor's office has brought charges against a 32-year-old man before the court of lay assessors. According to a statement on Tuesday, the authorities have charged the man from Gambia with, among other things, resisting law enforcement officers and attempted grievous bodily harm.
The case from September had made headlines because Tübingen's mayor Boris Palmer had written to Interior Minister Thomas Strobl and Justice Minister Marion Gentges (both CDU) about it. He was also criticized for this, for example because there was a risk that a group of foreigners would be placed under general suspicion.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the 32-year-old initially threatened two Deutsche Bahn employees and then called police officers verbally and with a bicycle lock. During his arrest, he allegedly bit a police officer on the forearm and fell into the track bed with another officer. The officer suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall. According to the public prosecutor's office, the 32-year-old could not be proven to have deliberately caused the life-threatening injuries to the police officer.
According to a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office, the charge was brought before the court of lay assessors at Tübingen district court because it is theoretically possible that the sentence in the case could exceed two years.
