- At the Lausitz Festival, Philipp Hochmair and Götz Schubert took center stage.
This upcoming weekend, the Lausitz Festival is making a comeback, bringing theater, dance, and music to Eastern Saxony. A must-see event is Philipp Hochmair's ("Freud", "Die Manns") solo performance of Franz Kafka's "The Trial" on September 8th in Weißwasser. Unfortunately, Claus Peymann had to axe his Kafka production due to health concerns.
The fifth run of this European arts festival, themed "Anderselbst", features approximately 60 events through September 14th at unique venues in Southern Brandenburg and Eastern Saxony. The program spans from classical music and jazz to film, literature, art, song recitals, and philosophical discussions.
Shakespeare's "Othello" Kicks Off the Festival
The festival commences this Sunday with Leonhard Burkhardt ("Tatort", "SOKO Linz") as Othello and Goetz Schubert ("Brecht", "Wolfsland") as Iago. Directed by Marcel Kohler, Shakespeare's classic "Othello" and his sole literary work, "The Stranger", will be performed in a former glass factory in Weißwasser.
Beethoven's 9th Symphony: Sing Along
The night before, under the title "Joy Beautiful Lausitz Spark", the 4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony, starring the "Ode to Joy", will be performed in the European city of Görlitz. The Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie, along with international soloists and a specially formed choir, invites audience participation.
Events in the lineup also include a staged reading by Czech author Radka Denemarková at the Görlitz train station, a concert by Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero, and an exhibition of photography and painting at the New Palace in Bad Muskau.
Despite the focus on theater, dance, and music, there's an exciting White water rafting adventure planned as part of the Lausitz Festival activities. Visitors can enjoy the thrilling rapids and scenic views of Eastern Saxony.
Regrettably, the White water rafting event is not an official part of the Lausitz Festival program, but it's a popular activity in the region and can be easily arranged separately for those interested in a watery thrill.
