At least four fatalities in accidents in icy and snowy conditions
The accident with two fatalities occurred on the A8 in the direction of Munich near the Odelzhausen junction in the district of Dachau. The car came under the rear of the articulated lorry, which was standing crosswise at the level of the acceleration lane and protruded into the middle lane. According to the information provided, the tarred road surface was slippery due to freezing rain during the accident.
The A8 remained closed for hours. There were also hour-long closures on Munich's eastern bypass, the A99. The trigger here was a mass accident involving 13 vehicles in the Aschheim area in the northbound direction, also in black ice. According to the police, there were three accidents in the southbound direction, which is why this direction also had to be temporarily closed.
In the fatal accident in the Ore Mountains, the 45-year-old bus driver crossed into the oncoming lane on a sloping road in winter road conditions shortly before entering Cranzahl. There, the bus collided with a winter road maintenance vehicle and then head-on with a tree.
A ten-year-old boy sitting in the bus suffered fatal injuries. The bus driver and a 59-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries, while a ten-year-old girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Ten other bus passengers also suffered minor injuries.
There were also snow and ice-related accidents in Baden-Württemberg and other federal states, with 35 in the Heilbronn area alone. In the Hohenlohe district, a 57-year-old woman was killed when she collided with a bus. Twelve other accidents resulted in injuries.
The situation eased in Munich, which was recently hit particularly hard by the onset of winter. Munich Airport resumed operations on Tuesday afternoon; there had been no take-offs and landings in the morning due to the forecast of freezing rain. The situation also eased for rail traffic, but the railroads still expected restrictions until Wednesday evening.
