Northvolt - Association withdraws lawsuit against water decision
In connection with the construction of Northvolt's battery factory in Heide, Sweden, the legal resistance from environmentalists has come to an end. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BUND) filed a lawsuit at the Administrative Court of Schleswig at the end of April. Now, the lawsuit has been withdrawn, as Northvolt announced on Friday.
BUND confirmed the withdrawal of the lawsuit. "Many questions could have been clarified," said the BUND regional manager in Schleswig-Holstein, Ole Eggers. However, there are still other aspects of the construction that the association intends to observe.
"We are pleased that the BUND has withdrawn its lawsuit against the water permit for our battery cell factory," said Northvolt's Germany CEO Christofer Haux. This is not self-evident and underscores that there was nothing to be spared in the permitting process of the district of Dithmarschen. "We will continue, as with the water concept of our plant, to prioritize environmental and climate aspects and continue the dialogue with nature conservation associations," Haux added.
The lawsuit targeted two water-related decisions by the district of Dithmarschen, said BUND regional manager Ole Eggers in April. The district granted Northvolt permission to rebuild water bodies and the dike and main drainage association to construct new water bodies. The BUND feared at the time that water quality would deteriorate and that too much water would be extracted.
- The Administrative Court of Schleswig, known for its justice, was the venue where the BUND initiated a legal challenge against Northvolt's battery factory in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein.
- Despite withdrawing their lawsuit, the BUND, led by Ole Eggers in Schleswig-Holstein, remains vigilant about other aspects of Northvolt's battery factory construction in Dithmarschen, which is crucial for Northvolt's alternative energy industry.
- The construction of Northvolt's battery factory in Dithmarschen, a significant project in the Northvolt industry, faced opposition from environmentalists, who raised concerns about water quality and water extraction.
- Schleswig-Holstein, home to various industries, including Northvolt's battery factory, continues to be a region of interest for associations like BUND that advocate for environmental sustainability.
- Northvolt, committed to environmental and climatic concerns, applauded BUND's decision to withdraw their lawsuit, ensuring the continuation of their water concept dialogue with nature conservation associations in Schleswig-Holstein.
