Association: Proportion of modern heating systems in Thuringia has risen

Just under one in five heating systems in Thuringia is less than five years old. This is the result of a regional analysis of the study "How does Germany heat?" published on Friday by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW). According to the study, the proportion of modern heating systems in Bavaria is 19.2 percent. In 2019, it was only 13.5 percent.

At the same time, the proportion of particularly old heating systems with a service life of more than 25 years has risen slightly - from 23.4% to 25.4%. On average, heating systems in Thuringian homes are 13.9 years old, just like the national average (2019: 17.2).

According to the association, there are major differences between the various technologies: oil central heating systems are 20.8 years old on average in Thuringia, gas central heating systems are 13.7 years old and other heating systems are 11.4 years old.

Additional heating sources are used in around a third of homes in Thuringia. Fireplaces remain particularly popular (50.0 percent), followed by wood and pellet stoves (29.5 percent) and direct electric heating systems such as fan heaters (20.9 percent).

With the Building Energy Act and municipal heat planning, the German government, made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP, wants to ensure that heating in Germany becomes more climate-friendly. The law aims to gradually make heating in Germany more climate-friendly by replacing oil and gas heating systems.

It stipulates that every new heating system installed in future must be powered by 65% renewable energy. The law will initially only apply to new-build areas from 2024. For existing buildings, municipal heating planning is to be the linchpin, which is to be introduced gradually.

Consumers in Thuringia can significantly reduce their energy consumption and contribute to climate change mitigation by replacing their aging heating systems with modern, energy-efficient models. Living in a house with a new heating system not only improves indoor comfort but also helps decrease reliance on fossil fuels and promotes the adoption of renewable energy sources.
