Association of Cities impatient: money for the Deutschlandticket is missing

The Deutschlandticket is being celebrated as a success by many politicians, but is increasing the financial gaps of many transport companies - not to mention the lack of money for a better public transport network.

49 euro ticket - Association of Cities impatient: money for the Deutschlandticket is missing

In the face of the unclear financing of Germany tickets, the Bavarian City Conference is becoming increasingly impatient. The chairman Markus Pannermayr (CSU) sees black for the future of the offer if a solid financing solution is not found. "If there is no solid financing, then the Germany ticket cannot be given nationwide anymore", Pannermayr stated in Munich.

In the short term, the 49-Euro ticket could become more expensive without a quick confirmation from the federal government, warned the mayor of Straubing. The Germany ticket for regional transport with bus and train has been available since May 1st of the previous year. Since the revenues do not cover the expenses, the federal government and the states had each agreed on a 1.5 billion Euro subsidy for this year.

This is also expected to be insufficient. Therefore, the federal government had promised in the fall of the previous year that unused funds from that year could be transferred to this year. However, this has not been implemented yet. "The financing of the Germany ticket is not secured, not even for this year", Pannermy stated. "The federal government has not even kept its promise to transfer the remaining funds from 2023 to 2024."

Is the Germany ticket in Munich no longer valid soon?

In Munich, it is already being considered whether the transport association MVV will be able to afford the ticket in the future. On July 17th, the shareholders' meeting will decide whether the ticket should still be valid in the transport association beyond August.

"Whether the shareholders' meeting will decide on the continuation depends on whether a sufficient new financing commitment from the federal government and the Free State is obtained and no compensation for tariff shortfalls for the Germany ticket is required from the duty bearers in the MVV", said an MVV spokesperson. "If the shareholders' meeting comes to the conclusion that these prerequisites are not met, this would lead to the expiration of the Germany ticket in the MVV." However, it is assumed "that the federal government and the states will not let the ticket fail".

Special conference of transport ministers on Monday

On Monday, the transport ministers of the states want to meet for a special conference. In addition, the financing for the coming year is still unclear. A third factor is the high investment requirement for the improvement of infrastructure.

The offer and tariff in public transport should invite passengers to switch from car to train and bus, said Pannermayr. "The reality is different: passengers complain about full, delayed, canceled or missing trains and buses." Urgent necessary investments in infrastructure and punctuality are not in sight. "A fair financing concept must provide planning security for years."

  1. The Future of the Germany ticket being nationwide depends on finding a solid financing solution, as stated by Markus Pannermayr from the CSU.
  2. The Future financing of the Germany ticket in Munich is under consideration, with the MVV shareholders' meeting set to decide its continuation on July 17th.
  3. To ensure the Germany ticket's continuation, a new financing commitment from the federal government and the Free State is necessary, according to an MVV spokesperson.
  4. The Association of Cities is growing impatient about the unclear financing of Germany tickets, which could impact the future of public transport as a viable alternative to car traffic in Germany.
  5. The Federal Government and the states are expected to attend a special conference of transport ministers on Monday to discuss the financing for the coming year, including the Germany ticket and the high investment requirement for infrastructure improvement.
