Association: Highest storm damage in the Salzland district
In Saxony-Anhalt, the Salzland district has been hit hardest by extreme weather events over the past two decades. According to the German Insurance Association (GDV) on Tuesday, storms, hail and flooding caused an average of 5,500 euros in damage to buildings there between 2002 and 2021.
The district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld (5,400 euros) and the state capital Magdeburg (4,000 euros) followed in second and third place. The June floods of 2013 and the August floods of 2002 hit Saxony-Anhalt particularly hard. At 53,300 euros on average, the flood damage caused by the June 2013 floods in the district of Stendal was the most expensive for the homeowners affected.
"The residents of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel got off the lightest in the 20 years. The average loss there was around 1,500 euros per building," the GDV reported. The national average is 2900 euros per building over 20 years.
Damage caused by extreme weather can be covered by natural hazard insurance, it said. So far, however, only 49 percent of buildings in Saxony-Anhalt have this protection.
The Salzland district, which has faced the highest storm damage, underscores the importance of having insurances to cover such costs. Despite only 49% of buildings in Saxony-Anhalt having natural hazard insurance coverage, it can provide significant financial relief during extreme weather events.
