Smaller towns with populations up to 50,000 will receive financial support for their swimming pools if they offer lessons. The state parliament's municipal committee approved the allocation of millions of euros on Thursday, as reported by the Left and CDU. The upcoming multi-day session in June will need to ratify this regulation.

The draft bill was proposed by the Left, SPD, and Green factions in the government, in response to higher energy costs for heating and hot water. In total, 5 million euros are set aside for these towns, with the goal of promoting school swimming.

Katja Maurer, the municipal politician from the Left, revealed that the funds would come from the Corona and Energy Special Fund of the state. This allows for swift and hassle-free disbursement of the money.

CDU's opposition faction previously supported allocating funds to municipalities with 50,000 or fewer inhabitants. By extending this offer, all towns within a district could potentially receive financial assistance for their swimming pools. Previously, the red-red-green coalition had only considered municipalities with under 20,000 inhabitants. Rising costs are affecting all cities and municipalities, noted CDU MP Thadeus König. Furthermore, Thuringia needs a new strategy for developing swimming pools.
