Assessment on constitutional safeguards: Faeser perceives democracy as "significantly threatened"

Political Leader Thomas Haldenwang Mentioned an Elevated Level of Threats. The possibility of jihadist attacks has escalated after the Hamas terrorist incident in Israel. Currently, Germany is a target of interest for islamist terrorist groups as well as dangerous lone actors. The Middle East conflict has contributed to an intensification of antisemitism in Germany.

As per the Annual Report of the Constitutional Protection, there was a record high of 39,433 crimes with extremist origins reported in the year 2023, showing a rise of about 4000 compared to the previous year. The total count of politically motivated crimes increased to 60,028 (compared to 58,916 in 2022).

Faeser stated that the risk through espionage, sabotage, disinformation, and cyber attacks has now reached new heights. The primary suspects behind these activities are Russia, China, and Iran. The report reveals that Russian propaganda and disinformation have notably increased in potency. The actions of China also pose significant challenges to the cyber and espionage defense mechanisms.
