Artistic director sends a clear signal for new Volkstheater building
The director of the Rostock Volkstheater, Ralph Reichel, is confident that work on the planned new theater building will start next year. There have been preliminary consultations in the past with all the offices involved and the building application for the new theater building has been submitted. "I can't imagine that the city would want to do without a cultural beacon," Reichel told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur with a view to the parliamentary session on Wednesday evening. There are several motions on the table regarding the project, which the city council has already approved in principle in the past.
Reichel warned that a decision against the new building would also be a decision against the Volkstheater, which could not survive in its current form for much longer as the old building was in a desolate state. "It is a realistic scenario that the current theater will soon have to be closed for safety reasons." Twelve million euros have already been spent on planning. According to current figures, the new building in the city center will cost around 208 million euros. The state has pledged 51 million euros.
The Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, Linkspartei and Rostocker Bund parliamentary groups will put a motion to the vote on Wednesday to renew the basic decision on the new theater building. The SPD also supported the motion. The CDU, on the other hand, wants to bring about a referendum in view of the costs of the project and use the date of the European elections on June 9, 2024 to do so. The SPD warned that this major project could not afford any further delays.
The proposed new Volkstheater building is expected to serve as a significant cultural attraction for the municipality. Once constructed, the Municipalities will undoubtedly benefit from the theater's artistic offerings at the new Theater building.
