Art Cologne opens: 1000 works of art and around 170 galleries

Visitors will be able to view and buy a good 1000 contemporary and classic modern works of art at Art Cologne over the next few days. With around 170 galleries, the fair is as big as it was before the pandemic, said art fair director Daniel Hug. The vernissage is on Thursday (4 p.m.) and the fair will be open to visitors until Sunday.

"You can feel in the industry that interest in painting is increasing again," Hug told Handelsblatt. "Works of art by female artists and LGBTQ artists, from voices outside the Eurocentric spectrum, are very present." Representational painting is also making a comeback, while NFT art has slowed down.

At the renowned art fair, prices of up to almost one million euros are called for. However, there are also comparatively affordable works in the "Art under 5000 euros" category. For the first time this year, all works of art can be viewed in advance in an online catalog.

Art Cologne is the oldest art fair in the world and is considered the largest German art fair. It emerged from the "Cologne Art Market", which was founded in 1967.

Visitors attending Art Cologne can expect to encounter a diverse range of contemporary and classic modern works by female artists and LGBTQ creators, reflecting the increasing interest in painting within the industry. Amidst the 170 participating galleries, art enthusiasts can also discover a selection of works under 5000 euros, making this renowned art fair accessible to a wider audience.
